About the Steamboat Marathon

Runners in the Steamboat Marathon

The Steamboat Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K takes place each year in early June in Steamboat Springs. The next race is scheduled for June 7, 2026, marking the 45th annual running of the event.

Participants can choose from three race distances:

  • Marathon (26.2 miles)
  • Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
  • 10K race

The marathon course begins near Hahns Peak Village (a former mining village north of Steamboat Springs) and follows a scenic route down the Elk River Valley before finishing in downtown Steamboat Springs.

Along the way, runners enjoy spectacular views of the Yampa Valley, rolling ranchland, and the snow-capped Rocky Mountains. The race is widely regarded as one of the most scenic races in North America and has even been recognized as a “Top 10 Destination Marathon”.

Because the course begins at over 8,000 feet in elevation, runners experience the unique challenge of high-altitude racing combined with a mostly downhill profile that makes it popular for personal best times.

The race starts at 7:30 a.m. and offers well-supported aid stations, enthusiastic local volunteers, and a festive finish line celebration in downtown Steamboat.
