Bike the ‘Boat!

Summertime biking is one of Steamboat’s many hobbies. From cruises on the core trail to participate in the Town Challenge, men, women and children alike never say no. Most families won’t pass up an opportunity to pedal around on the best Steamboat Springs bike trails. When staying with us in Steamboat Springs, check out some of our incredible biking trails throughout the summer and fall. We have plenty of recommendations!

The Yampa Valley Core Trail

For those who prefer to cruise around town, the Yampa Valley Core Trail is perfect for all ages and all experience levels. This 7.5 mile paved trail runs riverside through downtown Steamboat, while it remains uncrowded and perfect for families. Therefore, it provides a pleasant journey into the heart of Steamboat. When staying on the mountain, it is even accessible through a smooth-sailing ride from the hill. Be ready for that uphill battle on the way back, though! Along the way, stop at the Yampa River Botanic Park, Bud Werner Memorial Library, or one of our many delicious eateries and breweries. This is a great way to dip your toes into the biking community and see how you do.

Road Biking

With tons of loops and rides for road bikers, people come from all over the state and all over the country to test their skills on our terrain. From cruising up and down Rabbit Ears Pass or the challenging route to South Routt on 131, there are many scenic areas to try out road biking. Elk River Road allows for a 36, 49, 62, and 73.5 mile ride, therefore allowing you to choose your distance and difficulty with ease. With road biking, of course, comes safety and rules of the road as well. Always stay visible, use hand signals, and wear your helmet. Share the road regardless of if you’re on the bike or on the road. We recommend this for more experienced road bikers, as there can be traffic along these stretches of road as well as tight shoulders for the bikers.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a sport Steamboat locals frequent — the Town Challenge being the first example of that. For a first stab at mountain biking, try Buffalo Pass and Long Lake Loop for a quick 14 miles. For those who want to progress in their sport, Emerald Mountain Trail System provides easy, moderate and difficult biking, therefore making this is great for those who want to track their progress.  In the summer, Steamboat Mountain even allows you to haul your bike up to the top and cruise over the snowless ski runs! Load your bike onto the chair lift and cruise all the way down — one of the best parts of summer here in Steamboat.

Whether you are new to biking or looking to test your skills, Steamboat has a diverse and close-knit biking community. It allows you to interchange the sport and constantly challenge yourself. You’ll experience different terrains with gorgeous scenic views, and also find opportunities to introduce your children to this active sport as well.
